Phyllis (Adamson) Gannon will be 90 years old on Nov. 23, 2016. Cards may be sent to her at 2147 260th St., Grand Junction, IA 50107.
An open house hosted by her children and their families will be Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2 to 4 pm at the St Brigid Parish Center in Grand Junction.
Rippey community events:
Saturday, Dec. 4: FOR Christmas breakfast: The Friends of Rippey will sponsor their annual Christmas breakfast at the Rippey Community Building. The breakfast will be held Saturday, Dec. 3 from 8 to 11:30 am. Breakfast will consist of breakfast casserole, fruit, sausages, cinnamon rolls, as well as beverages.
Midge Grow will play holiday tunes on the community room piano donated by the family of Carson Griffith. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be in the building to talk with Rippey area boys and girls beginning at 10 am. Gifts will be made available by the Rippey Lion’s Club for good little girls and boys.
This is an annual tradition going back to the 1930s when Rippey business owners provided calendars as gifts for their customers. Peoples Trust & Savings Bank will have a special opening of the bank on that Saturday to participate in their usual calendar give away.
The breakfast fee is a donation to the Friends of Rippey for ongoing expenses such as the website. FOR will be requesting funds from the Greene County Community Foundation for community improvements at the Rippey ball park in February. Copies of the book Five Years in Heaven by John Schlimm are still available for patrons who are interested in the book discussion. Call the library for further information. Those who have books checked out, please return as soon as possible, as they need to be returned to libraries from whom the Rippey library borrowed them.

Adult Sunday school at 9:30 am; worship at 11 am; THUG youth group at 6 pm. Every Tuesday, quilters at 9 am, coffee and fellowship at 10 am. Every Wednesday, choir practice at 7 pm.
Wednesday, Nov. 23: No confirmation or choir practice due to the ecumenical Thanksgiving service at the Presbyterian Church at Grand Junction. The THUG group will serve a soup and sandwich supper at 6 pm with the service to begin at 7. The mass choir, under the direction of Dick Bardole, will practice at 6:30 and all singers are welcome.
Sunday, Nov. 27: Hanging of the Greens potluck after church services, then decorate the church for the season.
Rippey Lions Club: The Rippey Lions Club enjoyed a delicious supper prepared and served by Phyllis Bardole and Connie Neese on Thursday, Nov. 17. Reports from the Spaghetti Supper were shared. Thanks to all who helped and it was decided to split the proceeds between the Leader Dog for the Blind program and scholarships for Camp Herkto Hollow, a camp for children with diabetes. The Lions Club is sponsoring a bingo game hosted by Maralynn and Myron Rinker at the Rippey library meeting area at 10 am on the third Thursday of each month. The next gathering will be in January.
Following the business meeting, Dale Hanaman introduced a DVD presentation by Jim Daubendick, “History of the Telephone in Greene County.” He included information, pictures of the early telephone pioneers in our area, and the many telephone companies that existed on the journey to the telephone services that exist today. His family has been part of the Jefferson Telephone Company for four generations.
After the DVD, Lions Club members shared stories of the party lines, including line rings and how the operators helped keep track of community life in Rippey. Telephone operators included Edith Anschutz, Bernice Riley and Hazel McClintock, cousin of Myron Rinker.
The next meeting will be a Christmas potluck on Dec 1 at 7 pm at the Rippey United Methodist Church.
Perry High School class of 1949: Virgene Morse joined other classmates at Mars Dairy in Perry for their monthly gathering of the Perry High School class of 1949. The group meets every month during the year, except for the winter. Others enjoying the time together included Rose Burton, James Mace and his wife Elsie, Fred Peterson and his wife Mary, and Delores Holcomb of Perry. Marjorie Caldwell was a guest, also. Several regulars have gone south already or were unable to attend because of illness. It’s always good to keep in touch and all wished each other good health over the winter until they gather again in the spring of 2017.
